The Lady of Shalott, John William Waterhouse, Magnificent 30″ x 40″ Oil on Canvas Reproduction By Alexei King, serious offers entertained in the region of $2500
Probably Waterhouses best known and much loved painting. The work is a representation of a scene from Lord Alfred Tennyson’s poem of the same name in which the poet describes the plight of a young woman who yearned with an unrequited love for the knight Sir Lancelot, isolated under an undisclosed curse in a tower near King Arthur’s Camelot. Waterhouse painted three different versions of this caricature as did other artists of the period such as Millais , however the Waterhouse version is as I have said, probably Waterhouse’s tour de force .
